How to be a "questionable" Christian in the best possible way.

Short and helpful are two words to describe Surprise the World by Michael Frost. Frost builds the book on the foundation of 1 Peter 3:15-16 encouraging the leader to see the fact that Christians are to live "questionable" lives in order to be effective evangelists. As Frost points out it was in being different from the surrounding culture that the early Christians won an audience for the gospel and effectively changed a globe spanning empire. The second chapter lays out the five habits Frost believes would bring unbelievers to inquire about the gospel.
The habits Frost encourages us to develop are blessing others, eating with others, listening to others , learning Christ, and being sent on mission in day today life. Each habit focused on others is seeks to balance fellowship and evangelism. So the person following out these habits would seek to bless, eat, and listen to and with three different people during the week and one of three would be a nonChristian. I personally think that this is helpful and doable, there is a danger of neglecting relationships with those outside of the church, but there is the equal and opposite danger of neglecting our relationships with others.
Because of its shortness and simplicity this book would be beneficial for any believer seeking to learn how to live and intentional life looking for bridges to bring the gospel to others.

Short Book on How a Missional Way of Life Can Become Habitually Ingrained in Us

One aspect of being a Christian is to reach out to the world and try to show them the love of Christ and lead them to Him. There are many books on how to do this. Some take a more methodological approach, teaching us steps to evangelize. Others are more inspirational, trying to work up more of a desire in us to evangelize. I'm not sure I've ever read one quite like one I received from Tyndale Publishers and NavPress.
"Surprise the World: The Five Habits of Highly Missional People" by Michael Frost is in a category of its own. Rather than teaching us a method for sharing the gospel or trying to excite us and remind us of why we should, Frost's book goes more to the heart of the matter, helping us develop habits that will naturally lead to an increased desire to share Christ and the ability to so more naturally.
Frost is quick to point out in the book that not everyone is gifted as an evangelist. We are all, however, meant to be evangelistic as we live our lives. Frost explains that
"the biblical model is for leaders to (1) identify, equip, and mobilize gifted evangelists (who then take a leadership responsibility for the church's evangelism) and (2) inspire all believers to live questionable lives. If all believers are leading the kind of lives that evoke questions from their friends, then opportunities for sharing faith abound, and chances for the gifted evangelists to boldly proclaim are increased." (p. 5)
I agree with his take on this. We are all to be evangelistic, looking for opportunities as they arise, while some are more gifted to evangelize in more major ways.
To help believers live a questionable life, Frost offers his acronym: BELLS. The "B" stands for "bless"; the "E" stands for "eat"; the first "L" stands for "listen"; the second "L" stands for "learn"; and the "S" stands for "sent." Each of these is more fully fleshed out this way:
"If you bless three people every week, you're going to become a very generous person.
If you eat with others, you'll develop a greater capacity for hospitality.
If you foster the habit of listening to the Holy Spirit, you'll become an increasingly Spirit-led person.
If you're learning Christ, it's fair to assume you'll become more and more Christlike.
If you're journaling the myriad ways you've been sent into your world, you'll increasingly see yourself as a sent one, or a missionary in your own neighborhood." (p. 23)
Chapters 3 through 7 take these ideas and dig deeper into them, explaining why the author recommends them and giving practical ways to live them out. I found the chapters on learning and being sent to be especially good.
As one reads, Frost explains that the idea is that these things become habitual, things that we normally do without thinking. As with any habit, it takes time and effort to move from it being something new that we have to remember to do to something that we do as a natural part of of our lifestyle. As we live these ideas out, the world should take notice that something is different about us. In light of this difference, a way may be opened for us to share the gospel with them.
Chapter 8 encourages us to form a group of three people who are in agreement to live the material in the book out. This small group meets for "Discipleship, Nurture, and Accountability" (Table of Contents).
The back of the book contains a form to use in the small group, some questions for digging deeper as one studies the book, and an appendix with recommended books and movies on learning Christ.
The book is a small book, at 104 pages of the main text (125 with the form, questions, recommended resources, notes, and section about the author). It is a quick read, but it is also a book I can see revisiting more slowly to think through the recommendations.
If you are struggling with a way to grow in your evangelistic living, I would definitely recommend reading "Surprise the World" as a way to help you.

Clever And Concise

In many ways, this book is clever written and ought to appeal to believers who come from a social gospel perspective. The book provides a great deal of praise for people like Stott and Jim Wallis and N.T. Wright, who come from a more radical perspective. The book itself advocates an approach to Christian living that is deliberately designed to provoke question from others, something some of us happen to do well on our own but which some people would need the sort of help and encouragement that this book provides. In terms of its broad focus, this short book, which began its life as an online guide for churches wishing to promote “missional” thinking among their brethren, and which even with its appendices only takes up about 125 very small pages and makes for a very small and handy guidebook for those who want to be up-to-date on the practice of politically left-wing Christianity.
In terms of its contents, this book focuses on the five habits of highly missional people, itself an unacknowledged crib of Stephen Covey’s seven habits. The five habits themselves are simple and straightforward, and described with some Bible references, which are noteworthy and worthwhile, as well as references to various jargon that is less rooted in scripture and more rooted in politics and even occasionally New Age culture. The five habits are as follows: We bless people, both in and outside the church, we eat together, sharing meals with believers and nonbelievers, we listen to the guidance of the Holy spirit in private meditation, we intimately learn Christ as our leader and model, we see ourselves as sent by God to everywhere life takes us. Beyond these five habits and their explanations, the book advocates living “questionable” lives that are provocative and countercultural, the difficulty of learning new habits, and the development of groups of people to provide help in discipleship, nurturing, and accountability so that we fulfill what we have set out to do, and that resemble nothing more than small radical cells within larger congregations, along with some helpful appendices that include questions for discussion and engagement as well as resources for learning Jesus.
As might be expected, this book is a mixture of both very worthwhile and sound advice and advice that is less biblically sound. For one, although the book advocates a dual track for thinking about evangelism, the general track for members who are not considered to be particularly passionate or skilled in speaking about the Gospel are still given responsibilities that their congregational leadership may find somewhat excessive. Likewise, in the chapter on listening to God in private meditations, the author advocates the sort of undirected meditation that does not judge the reflection on anything, not even the scriptures of God, which makes his recommendation more of a Buddhist or New Age meditation than the sort of reflection that was found in the Bible (see, for example, Acts 9 and 10), where clearly the people having the vision were expected to respond to God and question, but obey, the will that God had for them. It is through an opening of the mind to spiritual influences without holding those influences accountable to the standards of God’s law that leads to people having the false belief of mystical revelations that depart from scripture, and is a particularly unwise policy to recommend. Despite this, though, the book is biblically sound to endorse that we show our concern for others in ways that are unexpected, so that we encourage others to ask us questions, and give us the opportunity to answer for the faith once delivered. More biblical doctrine and less pandering to unbiblical contemporary trends and fewer references to nonexistent Triune Gods would have made this a better book, though, although that is almost always the case with this sort of book.
