If I could I would place this book in every persons hand on the face of this earth, there's no life that hasn't been touched in someway by the spirit of fear...The Picasso painting has a price , but this book that was divinely inspired is "Priceless"...I have personally experienced the ravages of the spirit of fear.. while reading this book I experienced deliverance from the spirit of fear and all the lies that held me captive on so many levels..I thank God for Eric and his lovely wife who have given their lives to do spiritual warfare on our behalf....

An eye opening new series about the strongholds in own lives that we might not be aware of!

Eric M. Hill is an amazing author who writes in my favorite genre! I guess most contemporaries would label his books at Speculative Fiction, but to me it's almost like Christian horror with a Godly message behind it all. If you have ever wondered if there was an issue with things like Near Death Experiences, reincarnation, sèances, telekinesis, mental telepathy, clairvoyance, crystal balls, mediums, fortune tellers, or even astral projection, I would encourage you to pick up this book which is the first book in the Demon Stronghold Series, and starts with the Spirit of Fear.

In this world while it might be hard to believe for some, there is an unseen realm where spirits dwell. Angels and demons. Good and evil. The things we tend to get involved with however seemingly innocent could very well have tragic spiritual consequences without you ever knowing about it and then wonder why things in your life are spinning out of control. You have opened a door into your body that allows demons to take control over the aspects that you experimented with without realizing it.

In The Spirit of Fear, Daniel and Elsie are struggling to find resolution in their marriage especially considering that Elsie's family suffers from a mental disorder no one has been able to diagnosis because the women in the family are so afraid of what it might be they have resolved to live out their fears in the safety of their homes. It has been something that has been passed down through the generations beginning with her grandmother and now just days before her thirty-sixth birthday Elsie wonders if it will strike her as well. All she knows is that after years of studying to become a neurosurgeon, she quit and walked away just before she finished her final years of school. She was afraid she wouldn't succeed and that was what was causing the fiction between her and Daniel, both devout atheists. They had dreamed of the perfect life together and literally everything was falling into place until this.

Daniel knew this was not something he would live with especially if it impacted their daughter Amanda who was suffering from nightly night terrors until her twin sister Anna, prayed over their daughter and the fears seemed to have left. He isn't sure what is going on but like other members in Elsie's family, he isn't sure he can handle her spending her days hid in a home afraid to go out anywhere. What kind of life is that? When Elise and Amanda have a fateful encounter with an old woman at Starbuck's things begin to shift in the spiritual realm for both better and worse. For Elise, she isn't ready to accept that there is a God or that there is anything wrong with her. She vows that she can handle whatever life deals her on her own without anyone or any God's help. Soon she will learn that without God's help and dabbling in your own research into fighting this generational curse will take more than she has and might cost her everything she holds dear.

I received The Spirit of Fear by Eric M. Hill compliments of SunHill Publishers for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation, aside for a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest and personal review. I absolutely LOVED this new series and can only imagine how far Eric will take this one. The most exciting part about this was thinking how wonderful it might be to have my name added in this series, and got a divine surprise when the old women in the book went by Miss Malak, my maiden name. I've always known that it has meant messenger or angel so it was super nice to see that when I least expected it. The best part of this book is the awareness of how innocent things like I mentioned in the opening paragraph can be and what effects it has on the person who is doing them without their knowledge. Hopefully this will be picked up by lots of believers and non believers alike and lives will be forever changed. For me, I'd rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars.

this book provided good insight into the spirits of fear and how they ...

Another anointed book by Mr. Hill. I literally find myself praying as I go along reading these books. Not for the characters in the book but for others who may be in the same situation. The author really delves into the spirit of fear that has bound this particular family for a long time and I can even see quite a bit of improvement in the authors actual writing as well. The only thing I wish the author would have done was provide some other stories or widened the story a bit to provide a view of saints or church people who may not have fear spirits living in them, are influenced by the spirit of fear in their lives as the spirit of fear is one that holds many back from doing the work that God has called them to. Work such as witnessing or praying for someone. Despite that, this book provided good insight into the spirits of fear and how they operate. Oh and the deliverance portion was very helpful! You could tell that the author has had experience with deliverance. Praise God for you Mr. Hill!

Charles Koch is the CEO of Koch Industries, Inc. Personally he was listed as the ninth richest person in the world in 2014. In this Instaread summary (think DETAILED review) the reader is presented with 9 Key Takeaways from the original book. Here are two to whet your appetite:

Somewhat helpful, but falls short.

Unlike most reviewers here, I paid for this Instaread pamphlet. Furthermore, I have no relationship with Koch Industries.

The pamphlet provides nine brief, dispassionate takeaways that reflect key points in the book (which I also read), but which hardly reflect the goodness that has been created by Charles Koch and Koch Industries. It appears to me that the author (who is not disclosed) of this pamphlet is actually hostile to Koch and perhaps to capitalism as well. It is particularly evident on page 29 of the pamphlet where the author is discussing Koch's style.

"Although [Koch] speaks candidly about his desire to improve the world ..., the book fails in this regard."

If you have read the book, you will know this statement is false. Charles Koch and his brother, David, grew Koch Industries into the largest private company in the country by pleasing customers. The book specifically discusses the importance of making sure customers are winners, rather than by screwing customers, or by making sure Koch's company got a special subsidy, or by lobbying for regulation to stop Koch's competition. Aside from providing livelihoods for over 100,000 employees, the lives and lifestyles of millions of people have obviously been improved, not only by the use of Koch Industries products, but also by the significant philanthropic endeavors of Charles and David Koch.

In my opinion, the key takeaways fail to reflect the obvious benefits that have come out the management principles at Koch Industries, and the section of the Instaread pamphlet on the author's style is a smear. It should be revised.

Interesting read. Good profit by Charles G. Kock Key Takeaways, Analysis and Review is centered around businesses as well as management. In order to have a successful business one must have successful employees who take ownership in their own work. In achieving the employees ownership is making sure they are the right fit for the job as well as the company. Also giving them incentives to keep the employees wishing to be more for the company. Addressing each employees strengths to the company is another vital area that many companies fail to address. Giving all employees same raise regardless of their own work ethic is a fail, not a strength. This is a short 35 page overview of the original book, however I believe many owners and managers could profit from reading this. Although I received this item at a free and or a discounted rate in exchange for an unbiased review, it does not change my opinion on product.

General real principles for any decent boss or manager

Had I written this book, I don't know that I would have called it "mentoring 101". Perhaps instead, I would have called it "being a relational boss" or "bringing the best out of people at work".

Most of the book is focused on the type of mentoring that is focused on results from the perspective of the average American company life (either for profit or non-profit, as Maxwell provides examples of both).

While I may have renamed the book, that doesn't mean that it's bad. Maxwell brings out the basics of human interaction and goal achievement. He debunks several myths about management that we seem to inherently believe despite evidence to the contrary (i.e. "what most people need is isolation and time to do what they do," opposed to the truth of "most people need community and accountability").

Maxwell also uses a wealth of interesting stories and illustrations - probably because his occupation outside of being an author is being a pastor.

In my busy schedule it took me a couple of days to read this, so you could probably sit down and read the whole thing at once - and perhaps should do so every time that you hire someone or gain someone who you could be seen as a supervisor to.

I'm someone who struggles with the basics of "being a boss" to people when they seem like they don't perform up to my standards. This book gave me some helpful insights as to how I can change in order to cut down the frustration in those relationships. Hope it does similar things for you.

Somewhat trivial

I bought this book for my kindle to get a quick introduction to mentoring before starting a mentoring relationship. What I found is that the book does not really provide any deep insight into mentoring, mentoring techniques or any other practical guidelines but instead is mostly focused on general ideas and (somewhat trivial) general statements. While this might perhaps be sufficient to motivate somebody to develop a mentoring relationship, it is pretty much useless as a guide. This book reminds me of many other of the 'self improvement' category that try to give the reader a warm fuzzy feeling but don't provide anything of real use.

Packs a lot of wisdom about mentoring in a short book

Mentoring 101 is a very short and practical book on mentoring by a well known expert on leadership. The book has a distinct 'corporate' feel, suitable for bosses and managers, and takes a top-down approach to mentoring (i.e. the mentor initiating the mentoring relationship and deciding who to mentor). The book has three parts. First is 'Getting Ready to Mentor Others' which discusses the reasons behind becoming a mentor and how to adopt a mentor's mindset up-front. Part two is about 'Engaging in the Mentoring Process', talking about who to mentor, how to set them up for success, how to help them do better work, and how to create the right environment. Part three is on 'Taking People Higher', where he discusses how to help others become better people and how to handle it if they surpass you.

There is a lot of great advice throughout the book. Maxwell discusses motivations, the universal need to feel worthwhile and to be appreciated. He makes the key point that people buy into the person before they buy into their leadership - developing an authentic relationship is key. He also tells us about the need to make leadership development a top priority, treating every person as unique (bringing out their best, not trying to clone yourself), and how to help others find and use their strengths. Finally, the importance of building a culture for mentoring is discussed.

If you keep in mind that this book is extremely short and not a comprehensive guide to all-things-mentoring, it can make a great introduction for the relational leader or manager ready to get serious about leadership development.

Life lessons for a new age

We've known it was coming for two thousand years, but now that the Age of Aquarius is upon us, it feels like it came out of nowhere. Or at least, that's how it sometimes feels to me. I am SO ready for the change in energy but I've also felt the ripsaw of emotions and energies that accompanied the shift. This book helps clarify the confusion. This is a common-sense approach to living that anyone (even those not drawn to spiritual things) can appreciate and absorb and , more importantly, USE.

The lessons for dealing with negative people and the meditation exercises are really helpful, as is a simple mantra that helps boost thankfulness as well as mindfulness. Cultivating a grateful heart is a goal of mine, and I feel like this book gives me more tools for my tool box. A great new book for the new year and for the new age!

In this difficult time of change. Laurie explains in a very understandable manner what is going on and why. Her insight and knowledge of the subject is amazing. The reader of this book will understand why things may feel out of balance, but more importantly be given hands on tools on how to improve and handle ones life.

This is a MUST

I've read and followed Laruie J for a while. She was kind enough when my cat was dying to help me through the pain, and to help me understand if Plinkie knew what was going on. When I heard that she had published a book, I was on it....bought it and had read it within a week. 20 years ago I started reading what I would term "new age" books, and they excited me, and calmed me, and helped me understand. It has been about a decade since I've read a book that did what those books did to me back then. This book calmed me, helped me understand, and got me excited again about spirituality. I am so happy that Laurie decided to publish. There are beautiful nuggets of good, helpful information in here. I wanted to read more, I in fact told Laurie that I cannot wait for her to publish more of her work. This is a definite must.

The power of a new approach to results-driven, high-impact strategic thinking

Paul Butler, John Manfredi, and Peter Klein introduce and thoroughly explain a new approach to thinking simply, yet strategically: "That's TTW, Think to Win." I hasten to add that how "winning" is defined should be determined by the individuals and organizations that seek to achieve it. The key term is "strategic." I agree with Butler, Manfredi, and Klein that in the healthiest organizations, the most successful organizations, there is effective strategic thinking at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise.

As they point out, "Many companies have generated remarkable successes by creating traditions of strategic thinking. By instilling this capability throughout the organizations, companies such as Keurig, Jamba Juice, Procter & Gamble, Gillette, and New Balance have enjoyed years of dynamic growth. Butler, Manfredi, and Klein identify five principles that can serve as a "compass" to guide and inform strategic thinking:

o Challenge assumptions: Take no one and nothing for granted.
o Scope the issue: Determine its nature and extent.
o Rely on facts and data: Separate empirical evidence from "common knowledge."
o Focus on the vital few: Focus on the 10% that has the greatest impact on the 90%.
o Connect the dots: Make certain that they are the right dots and connected in the right pattern.

I commend the co-authors on their brilliant use of various reader-friendly devices, notably dozens of "Try This" application exercises strategically located throughout their lively and eloquent narrative. For business leaders who wish to introduce or strengthen strategic thinking throughout their organization, Paul Butler, John Manfredi, and Peter Klein provide an abundance of information, insights, and counsel. Some of the most valuable material is in two appendices: an "Organizational Alignment Survey and then a "Think to Win Situation Assessment Diagnostic: Situation Assessment Tool for Consumer/Customer Marketing." Although the mini-case studies focus on larger organizations such as Gillette, LEGO, and Duracell, I believe that almost all of the material (with only minor modification) can also be of substantial value to almost any organization, whatever its size and nature may be. That said, the value of the Think to Win - or any other approach, for that matter -- will depend entirely on the willingness and ability of those involved to master core concepts and requisite tools, then apply then effectively to the given need, challenge, or opportunity. I am convinced that the fastest way, the easiest way, the least expensive way, to achieve a strategic objective is to pursue it the right way.

Best Business Strategy Design Book

Think to Win (TTW) is the best strategy book for business leaders I have read in years! I couldn’t put it down until I read it cover-to-cover. In their book, the authors Butler, Manfredi, and Klein guide business management through the process of thinking through strategy rather than just responding to perceived threats or potential opportunities. This keeps C-level managers and their reports from business or project failure caused by rushed ideas rather than thinking things through. What the book teaches works for both non-profit and profit organizations. The authors start the book with tested guiding principles that sound a lot like quality improvement processes as well as management and organizational teachings at the MBA level, yet better illustrated than what the scholars teach. Their guidelines include: challenge assumptions, scope the issue, rely on facts and data, focus on the vital few, and finally connect the dots to see what will work and prevent a scattered approach for change. The process starts with 4 steps and tools to look at the present situation. During the steps of part 1, you will find tools like data analysis, SWOT, and SCA explained. Then the process moves to the four steps for looking to and planning the future. In part 2, you will continue to use SWOT plus develop: vision, core strategies, goals, plans, and communications. I thought so much of the guidelines and processes in this book that I included an outline of both on my business productivity blog!

This is one of the best business books I have ever read

This is one of the best business books I have ever read! I have been in the business world for over 35 years and through many complicated “canned” programs that last a few years in the company until replaced by the next fad. TTW is a straight forward, common sense approach to understanding your business and taking steps to formulating a winning future. It has many real life business references where the process has been successful and is very enlightening and entertaining. I have three children who are all gainfully employed with Fortune 500 companies and I am having them all read this book as a great primer for their ongoing business education.

Bill Jensen "gets" the intersection of technology, organizational design and organizational leadership. Future Strong is a call to action for anyone with a powerful personal purpose and wants to see it reach fruition. It's a challenge and a call to action for leaders who want to move "engagement" from lip service to service to their people. In many respects, he sounds the death rattle for command and control leadership.

In Future Strong, Jensen posits 5 choices--deeply personal and confronting--that can unleash the talent and creativity needed to succeed in a volatile, uncertain and chaotic world. And at its core, it is the pathway for people to own their own development and their own career. It's easy to entrap ourselves in a losing situation in terms of finding meaningful and productive work.

The principles are solid. The principles are illustrated with pithy examples drawn from his research of people who have made those deeply person choices. It's a hopeful view to me since I have come to the point of view that, when we have a long-enough perspective, we'll come to the conclusion that industrialization was an aberration on the path of human development.

Awesome Journaling Bible

This is my first journaling Bible and I am in love. It's pretty basic but it gets the job done and I love that it's NIV (most hardcover journaling Bibles are ESV.)
I use a variety of mediums on the pages, gesso, water color paint, acrylic paint, chalk pastels, pens, etc. and they hold up great!

This bible is awesome. I was not sure what to expect, as I wanted to use this for bible journaling. The pages are thicker than a typical bible page. I do think with watercoloring the pages will hold up well.

Got this to do artistic bible journaling. The pages have a yellow tint but hold up very well to gesso, water colors, acrylic and inks. The size is great and the lines in the margins are faint.

Unconventional & Irreverent

She understood the finances of making clothes as well as the fairy tale of fashion design. A good book to include for anyone who has an interest in the development of the American fashion industry.

A fortunate revival of a forgotten gem

I had come across this book in the Fashion Institute Library, years ago, and was taken by its contemporary tone - Hawes wrote beautifully and I wanted to read the entire book but I wasn't a student there and didn't have borrowing privileges. Fast forward to years later, and the NYT Sunday Styles section when the book was mentioned, and the 'Net where I was able to download a copy immediately.
The book is a must-read for an understanding of the American clothing business. It's also a fascinating look at what was going on in the States just before WWII in the lives of women. In a male-dominated industry even today, Hawes built a name for herself and succeeded where so many fail, year after year. Thanks again to the inter webs I was able to look at Hawes clothes: they are beautiful, edgy, and would work today.

In addition to being a wonderful designer who understood her customer perfectly, Hawes writes like a dream: the prose, like her designs, is neither quaint nor dated.

The one bone to pick I have with her thesis, was about the vast difference between the woman who could afford to have clothes made for her, and everybody else stuck with mass production: Hawes insisted quite rightly that the housewives, working women and those who had to buy department store clothing were poorly dressed and had almost no choice or quality. This discounts the fact that at that point, home sewing was very prevalent: I read a figure that 90% of households had a sewing machine as of the 1920s. Even if a woman did not make her own clothes, she might purchase a department store dress and 'fix' it: if she didn't have the machine or the skill, her mother, sister, friend, or a neighborhood tailor or seamstress might fix the dress for a small sum. Home sewing is much less common today. But this is a quibble: Hawes was a beautiful designer, a smart businesswoman with international experience, a wonderful writer, and this book is a pleasure to read.

Here's a business idea for anybody interested: re-issue the fashions of Elizabeth Hawes, Claire McCardell and Bonnie Cashin. It's time.

Great book, Kindle stumble

This book pulls no punches. Elizabeth Hawes tackles Paris, Seventh Avenue, and her struggle to make it as an American designer at a time when all fashion was thought to originate across the Atlantic. Hugely entertaining, and thought-provoking as she as she condemns badly designed, badly sewn, mass-produced "fashion."

The only quibble i had was with the Kindle edition. Kindle does not do well on charts and graphs or italics. The text was full of strange characters and garbled paragraphs. Buy this book, but buy it printed on paper!
