My Review:
Authenticity is a HUGE factor in what others will see in you and around you. I know when my husband and I started on this journey in ministering to others one thing that we both agreed on was transparency. We wanted to be completely transparent with others. Sometimes we are probably overabundant in this area and I think that can make those around us very uncomfortable. But we still feel it is very important.

The author stresses 4 very important things hat are the foundation of any great or her words "extraordinary" leader. The main thing that I see throughout the book is to ALWAYS give God the glory because after all, that is why we are in the position(s) that we are in in the first place. A great read to help you polish some of your skills.

Leadership and Jesus' Great Commandment

Jesus was once asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” (Mark 12:28). His answer, known as the Great Commandment, was twofold: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (12:30, 31).

Jenni Catron uses the four dimensions of the Great Commandment to illuminate the nature of leadership and show how ordinary leaders can become extraordinary ones. “[W]hen I consider my life as a leader,” she writes, “it means leading with all of who I am for the benefit of God and others. Leadership requires all of me—my heart, my soul, my mind, and my strength. To not give all of me would be to shortchange God and others of what God has given me.”

She uses the four dimensions to define extraordinary leadership:

Extraordinary leadership is found in a leader who has searched to discover his or her authentic self and from that place influences others to accomplish great dreams through intentional relationships (heart), spiritual awareness (soul), wise counsel (mind), and relentless vision (strength).

Catron recognizes that most leaders operate naturally and best in one dimension more than the others. For example, relationships come more naturally to them than spirituality, counsel, or vision. What comes best to them lends authenticity to their leadership. There is a dark side to this, however. Pushed to an extreme, relationally oriented leaders ignore problems or delay taking action when they must operate out of the other three dimensions, which do not come to them naturally. (The same might be said of leaders for whom spirituality, counsel, and vision come naturally and best.)

Extraordinary leaders strive to grow in all four dimensions of leadership. Leadership, Catron reminds us, is a matter of both nature and nurture, both inherent gift and developed talent. Her book outlines how leaders can grow in each of the four dimensions and thus exercise a more holistic form of leadership.

A Thoughtful Work On Christian Leadership

One of the most striking aspects of this roughly 200 page book is the fact that the author demonstrates herself to be remarkably well read, quoting books by authors like Metaxas, Covey, and Maxwell, and even publicly claiming that any great leader is a great reader as well, which the author certainly is. This book is designed to appeal to the large audience of Christian managers and business executives, the sort of large and healthy market that Maxwell used to appeal to effectively in his books when he was actually writing original books. The author strikes the right notes, quoting scripture thoughtfully and well, encouraging balance among leaders, providing examples from personal experience and observation, and speaking like the self-professed Christian leadership consultant that she is. This is not a bad thing, but those who approach this book looking for a contemporary book on leadership and management that includes biblical citations and brief commentary as opposed to the work of a theologian dealing with contemporary business practices will be pleased and pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed at its contents.

It is striking to note that the title of the book and its organizing structure spring from the language of the Shema, the commitment of practicing Jews to ethical monotheism and a full love and obedience to God above. Besides the text of this book, which introduces the need for a balanced perception of extraordinary leadership and discusses the four dimensions of leadership that need to be in balance, the heart (relational), the soul (spiritual), the mind (managerial), and one’s strength (visionary), the book also contains a personal leadership assessment to help the reader determine their strengths and weaknesses as leaders. Overall, the book takes a balanced approach between developing one’s capacity for leadership, recognizing both strengths and weaknesses that one has, and encouraging both that leaders find mentors and serve as mentors themselves in order to encourage others. Although this book is short and contains a great deal of material from other writers and thinkers, the resulting book is a skillful synthesis rather than a mere recapitulation or regurgitation of previous research.

This book, despite its generally warm and welcoming tone, is a reminder of a stark divide concerning leadership within our society and its institutions. On the one hand, the author encourages as wide as audience as possible to develop their capacity for leadership and growth across all levels of life, so that they are able to lead themselves and lead others. However, the author discusses that she herself, and many institutions of all kinds, have a certain comfort and preference for hierarchy that often hinders the development of leadership when potential is not recognized and encouraged and given the proper opportunities to flourish. The author is caught in a tension between a recognition that fear and insecurity and impatience govern the way many leaders behave and the fact that leadership is something that requires active cultivation by both the leader and by a surrounding institutional context. Though she does not focus attention on this tension, it is one that the book shimmers with, reminding us that leadership is an art and not a science, something that requires practice, something that is often messy and imperfect and complicated, largely because it deals with human beings and not automatons. The author can be praised for showing her own struggles to lead and to follow, her recognition of her own strengths and weaknesses, and the questions that keep her up at night. The wise reader will take this book as an opportunity for personal growth and reflection on how to become a better leader in their own lives, even if they have only themselves to lead in most aspects.

Book So Good Atheists Will Love It!

From beginning to end the book is great. He breaks down a lot of myths about business, faith and family. The sections on "The Lies of the Devil" were really great. I like too how each chapter ends with practical steps on what you can do. He makes a point about how the faith community is dominated by 1) Prosperity Gospel 2) Ignore Money 3) Get Out of Debt and you will be fine; and how ALL THREE just lead to larger problems. I have read a lot of business books, self-help books, start-up books, marketing books, etc but this is the most complete book I have ever read. As one of the other reviewers stated; "This is not a book, it is a curriculum for life."

If you are a Christian, Catholic, Jew, Muslim or even atheist who has bills to pay, food to buy, or causes that need support, you will love this book!

Good discussion and great points

Good discussion and great points, but a little heavy on the self-marketing in the action steps. The theory is good, but I think the book underscores the need for high value added skills when making a living and starting successful businesses in modern day. Most modern entrepreneurs expect everyone to bring value to the enterprise through being able to "do" something that other people cannot do. A good vision and an understanding of basic economics might open the door for you, but you need hard skills to make these things a reality--just knowing the right people creates the risk that they learn what you know in a day and steal you idea...happens all the time. In other words, I think much of this advice was great 30 years ago, but these days specialization is key and most of the low hanging fruit has been taken. Also, the math on expenses and inflation is extreme and will turn off even open minded people to the rest of the good discussion. I'm not saying it's wrong, but its based upon assumptions that do not necessarily apply to the majority of readers in order to make his case. It makes things a bit more grim then they may be for the actual reader.

That aside, it's a great book for gaining perspective and thinking more about how Christians should relate to the work. It pains me when Christians are hypocritical about money and encourage their children to live like the world with regards to work.

EDIT: I also want to note that the author at times implies that entrepreneurship is the will of God in all Christian's lives; the only scripture that explicitly speaks of the revealed will of God in the lives of believers is 1 Thessalonians 4:3 "For this is the will of God, your sanctification...". Our sanctification is the explicit revealed will of God and that relates more to "how" we work and live than "what" we work on, so it's a stretch to say that God's will is for us all to strive to be entrepreneurs--some may truly be called into support positions for entrepreneurs. So, while I agree that this is something good that all should strive for, it's a stretch to call it the will of God in everyone's lives...it certainly wasn't the will of God in Joseph's life when he was called into servitude and then public service under Pharaoh (employment).

Lastly, every time the writer writes "food" it has been replaced with "flood". Hopefully a minor issue that can be fixed in the kindle edition.

Josh Tolley totally opens up his heart and soul while teaching biblical truth about money and finances. I couldn't ask for a better teacher than this book. I see things in a new light about money and how God wants us to use it.

Josh takes money one step further than just managing it, he teaches you that God wants you to have more than just a J. O. B..., Josh teaches you that God wants you to make a difference all the way around financially as a child of God. In this book you will learn how it's done...

I'm not going to try to explain very much more; you just cannot abide book and find out for yourself.

 In the late 70"s I was working with land in New Mexico mostly south of Santa Fe along Hwy 14 "The Turquoise Trail" as it is known.  Santa Fe was just starting to grow south and Albuquerque was coming around the Sandia Mountains and growing north. Every parcel of land had a well or we drilled one. Sometimes we drilled dry holes, 1000 feet deep. In other areas we would hit sulfur water. Most often we found good water at less than 300 feet deep. An old well driller named Earl explained it to me this way, he said "you pay attention to this water because in your lifetime water will be worth more than gold". Honestly, at the time I did not think much about it.  Today in some of these areas the water table has dropped, leaving people with no water supply. Some now haul water to their homes.

Over the years my career has taken me to numerous states and has covered nearly every aspect of real estate. Land has always been the area of the business that I loved and I have paid close attention. When you do something you love it no longer feels like work, it is true. In 2003 my family moved to Nevada and I began studying the land and water rights in the West. There are many parcels of land for sale and very few with water rights. The more I learned, the more I was reminded of Earl the well driller's words so many years ago.

There have been many efforts to alert the public about our water issues yet the average person generally seems to feel helpless. They are at the mercy of the water faucet, turn it on and water always comes out. We take our water supply for granted, moving through life without even a thought of where our water comes from or how reliable it really is.

In the process of working with land with water rights, helping people secure land with the water rights that will work for them where, when and in the correct amounts, I became aware of that fact that most people know very little about water rights. First, many people do not realize they can own the rights to put water to their own beneficial use. Often these rights can be purchased for much less than many people think.
The book was written to explain concepts and ideas that apply to most regions. Where to find water rights. What are the various types of rights. When, where and how the water can be put to beneficial use. The book explains priority dates, place of use, allocated amount, time of use and more. Ideas to help locate water rights and how to evaluate water opportunities. I wrote the book to help you secure your water future.

The issues of increased demand, over allocation, aquifer depletion, and drought will be around the rest of your life. How well you choose to understand these issues and more importantly what you do for yourself are up to you. If you are interested in having more control in your life and control over your water supply, "How to Buy Water Rights" is your guide.

Don't be left out in the arid heat -- understand your water rights

This book makes sense of the complicated but urgent world of water rights. Chris Miller is clearly a leading expert in the field.

I saw the movie "The Big Short," about the economic collapse of 2008. I was interested to see that the man who first identified the problems with the mortgage bonds (and made $2.6 billion from his acuity) now only invests in one thing -- water. What does that tell you?

Highly Recommended - Desk reference for water rights!

I am a licensed real estate appraiser in Nevada and this book has become my new desk reference! After reading it 3 times and still find nuggets of new water rights understanding. This is highly recommended reading for not only to individuals seeking water independence and sustainability but also to professionals dealing with private land transactions.

The book dos not teach you how to buy water rights but only the importance of it, which we already know is important. I was disappointed in the lack of information and shortness of the book. Waste of money in my opinion.

A Tough but Necessary Pill to Swallow

Carol comes with truth, experience, and facts in the Confidence Factor for Women. This book is eye-opening, straight to the point with no fluff and I love it. I personally, had to take a hard look in the mirror because what i was reading was reflective of myself in business and how it was past due time to step my game up, confidently. Ignore this book at your Peril!

In the interest of full disclosure I am totally biased with respect to Geri's insights--I believed they are brilliant and spot-on even before reading this book. This is a good thing, and why I have actively sought out the opportunity to work with her as a partner on many occasions over the past 10 years, especially when doing large agile consulting engagements. She brings a perspective to working in large bureaucracies that I simply did not have. It is a very valuable perspective. It is probably more honest than most people care to hear, which is precisely why you should read the book.

We have worked together extensively at various clients doing agile implementations over many years. We have watched together several billion dollars of projects delivered using "agile" rigor. We've had long discussions about the issues and solutions raised in this book. We've cared deeply, perhaps too deeply sometimes, about helping our clients achieve the benefits provided by agility. I believe this passion comes through.

Read the book.

Read it slowly with a highlighter.

Take notes.

Consider seriously the positions and recommendations she presents. There is an entire career of experience captured in this book and it is rare to find an agile author willing to be this honest about the true challenges you face. Straightforward, insightful and honest.

I've been in the professional development arena for - well, longer than I care to admit - and this is one of the few examples where the author truly explored the subject from all angles and provided costs and benefits for all stakeholders, as well as a suggested path forward - and why this path as opposed to that. Agile, Waterfall, Asset Stewardship... If you are in a management role in any large organization, I recommend you not just read, but study and implement that which is covered in this book. Definitely an evergreen management resource.

A needed dose of reality for “agile” near hysteria ...

Rather than asking the question “to be or not to be agile” these days, it seems many businesses are defaulting to implementing agile approaches of some form. The agile movement has become almost a herd mentality … “Just do it” and urged on by hoards of new agile consultants.

The author adds a dose of needed reality to this situation by suggesting starting with better questions like: “What do we need?” and “What do we need to do to get there?” She then supplies information to help guide the reader in answering those questions. For instance, one further clarifying question the author suggests is: “Do we need better projects or better products?” If the analysis indicates that agile approaches of some form are needed, she offers analysis of what methods work best under different conditions..

One of the perhaps startling things you will learn in reading this book is that if agile approaches are used to solve the wrong problem or used in inappropriate settings, agile will actually make the situation worse. Another interesting nugget: some of the less widespread agile practices are easier to implement and gain quick wins.

Take advantage of the “Look Inside” feature to read the “Letter to Greg.” This ingenious idea will give you an excellent overview of the book and how they it can help you.

After you get the book, I suggest you next read the Introduction but then skip to he last section that sketches what an ideal agile organization looks like. The picture of the ideal will help you to evaluate your interest in and need for agility. You can then leverage the earlier sections for understanding more detail and deciding a course of action.

I have had the privilege of working with the author recently in assisting a Fortune 200 client work toward agility. Geri’s heart is to make sense of situations and solve problems, which is what she does in this book about the reality of agile. I and others encouraged her to write the book to add to the needed conversation about making “agile” successful instead of just trying to implement agile methods to appear “up with the times.”

Reading this book can potentially save your career from agile land mines.

Different areas contributing to low self-esteem and how to improve them

Okay... so it's not entirely a step by step guide, but I like it all the same. The author systematically divided the book into our life areas which may be feeling low, like expectations, reality, giving, values, etc. Then he proceeds on explaining each area and laying out possible ways on how to improve them. I must say it was a just a short read, but it was engaging enough that I didn't stop to take a breather or anything. The tone was neither too friendly nor was it reprimanding so that was good. Over all, I enjoyed reading it!
