About the Author
Richard Benjamin Cass, a retired airline pilot, has over 30 years experience in aviation. He saw his first Braniff jet at Dallas Love Field in 1972, and his passion for the airline began. His Braniff Flying Colors Collection, which contains his lifelong collection of Braniff historical items, is one of the largest groupings of Braniff collectibles known to exist. His career and interests have been solely devoted to aviation endeavors, and he has founded several successful aviation businesses. Cass is a native of Dallas, Texas, where he currently lives.

An Impressive Airline History Book....

In his position as President of the Braniff Airways Foundation, Mr. Cass has used his access to the Braniff archives (University of Texas at Dallas) to give airline history fans an amazing selection of never before seen color photos! Instead of the normal re-posted photos we usually get, the author has included first time close-up published photos of two 'test' DC-6's that were used for the new 1965 "Jellybean" livery as well as the little known 1966 Brown 727 that was quickly repainted before delivery, just to name a few! As far as I can tell, most of the photos have never been previously published! We get a photographic tour of aircraft, uniforms and the various Braniff buildings from 1928-82. Mr. Cass' enthusiasm for 'his' airline clearly comes through and it's a reminder of how the airline industry used to be. Arcadia's paper quality and overall colors are very impressive, considering the large amount of color photos in the 95-page paperback. Let's hope Mr. Cass will someday do a book just on my favorite 1965-71 "End Of The Plain Plane" era! The modeling website Airlinercafe.com has an excellent 15-part series (in Civil Forum section) on all the colors from the so called 'Jellybean 'period.

It is a great book telling the story of a once great airline

As a former Braniff employee I have to say Mr. Cass has done us Braniff folks proud. This book is in full color! How else could one tell the story of Braniff? As another reviewer mentioned it is not just a reprint of pictures from other book. There are some pictures l had only seen before in the company archives, and lots more I had never seen. It is a great book telling the story of a once great airline! The Flying Colors will not soon be forgot.

"A COLORFUL READ!"

An excellent book showcasing the "Flying Colors" when the industry in general had style, and Braniff certainly had a style all to its own. Mr. Cass has done a superb job capturing the history of Braniff in never-before-seen photographs that will light up your eyes! It's an absolute must for the aviation enthusiast or anybody studying the impact of branding and marketing. I thoroughly enjoyed it from front to back! Great job!

Lacking information, oversimplified for a sixth grader

Although the title indicates this is a sixth grade history book, it isn't. This book is overly simplified and there are barely any facts presented about the first civilization. There are basic grammatical mistakes, and it's a picture book more suited toward a preschooler or kindergartener, though the facts presented wouldn't be interesting to them. The facts are basic demographic information and there isn't really any insight into the first civilizations.

The book takes on the format of breaking the first civilizations into three different sections. First Ancient Mesopotamia, next Ancient Egypt, and finally the Indus Valley Civilization. Within each section you are given four photos of the area they are discussing, two of those photos have brief facts, usually a sentence or two, that are oversimplified and fail to present a story for the young mind to grab onto.

I do not recommend this book to anyone. It is over simplified and doesn't present enough information to consider it a sixth grade book, not to mention sixth graders are beyond picture books. For younger kids the picture book aspect works, but the information is dry and doesn't really tell them anything about those civilizations except basic demographic info which a younger child wouldn't find interesting.

This book needs more details, more discussion of the development of these civilizations, their challenges and advancements, culture, governments, an so much more. This book doesn't provide any of this information leaving it to be a worthless resource that wouldn't help any child in learning about these areas.

Great photos, just wish it went into more detail, geared toward younger readers not 6th graders....

Another Baby Professor book with some cool pictures. There are about 200 books in this ebook series that are offered in the kindle store for either free or for .99¢. You can't really go wrong with the books offered for free. There is a variety of subjects covered and most of the books follow about the same format. You can take a peek inside the books by clicking "Look Inside" and this is pretty much what you get in each book.

This particular book is nice and the photos are fantastic. The format for this book is similar to most of the Baby Professor books in this series which have a picture with a paragraph and facts on one page. Then the next page is just a photo. This book is actually lacking even more information than most because an entire other page has another picture with just the title of the name of the next civilization that it will talk about. It would be nice if they had another paragraph on that page too. I've come to realize that these Baby Professor books usually have something that could easily make them better, but so many of these books are offered for free and the pictures really are amazing, so it's tough to complain.

Anyway, overall, I do like theses books for their wonderful pictures. It would be nice if the books went into more detail but they are very basic books that I hope will get my kids interested in finding more about each subject.

I plan on keeping these books on my iPad for down time for my kids when they get bored waiting different places like the doctors office or practice for a sibling. I sometimes watch a friends 3 year old daughter and she likes to look through the pictures on my phone. I plan on showing her these books to keep her entertained. I think she will love them.

Brief but educational

The book “6th Grade History: First Civilizations” is one of the books in a series of educational books written by Professor Baby and published by Speedy Publishing. This book, which is a part of the “Children's Ancient History Books” series, provides children with a chance to learn about history in a fun and exciting way. These books are filled with exceptional photographs and content geared towards capturing a 6th grader's attention span. Easy and fun to read! These books are excellent for use in the classroom or at home. Excellent tool to help children not only learn about the past, but it helps to encourage them to read as well.

This colorful short book provides children with a brief overview on three of the first civilizations. Beautiful, detailed, colored photos along with age appropriate descriptions and fun facts about Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley Civilization, can all be found in this book.

These books are great conversation starters for children. The beautiful pictures open up a dialogue for children to express what they see and what they understand by looking at the photographs. Finally, a good tip for parents- these books are great for bedtime! Quick and easy to read, while also providing a little education to your child.

Incredible!

It just proves that even if you make a promise to marry someone you should NEVER feel forced to marry someone just because of that promise.

When you have dreams make sure they are shared by the person you are to marry, if not neither of you will be truly happy. Oh you may eventually grow a certain love for each other but you will always wonder: "What If" is that worth it? I don't think so.

My first marriage was like that, both of us suffered for five years. I was determined to make it work because I took my vows seriously, however he didn't. He cheated on me, left me for his best friends wife. I'm glad now because my present husband and I were supposed to be married a year before but his mother broke us up. A year after my divorce he and I were married and have been for 41 years.

So anyone reading this, DO NOT marry on the rebound or because you feel you have to, you will never be truly happy!

Wonderful life lesson once again.

SHE CAME TO DENVER TO MARRY A LAWYER BUT DID NOT WANT TO LIVE IN TOWN

Sally came to marry Joseph Murphy but was met by Rex Butler a RANCHER and best friend to Joseph. He took Sally to see his ranch and she fell in love with the out doors and all that was involved with the ranch. Joseph had a secretary named Annabelle who was a few years older than Joseph but she seemed to be a perfect wife for Joseph, she was everything and liked all those things Joseph liked. I think you get the picture here. They all go to have dinner at the ranch of Red Butler the sister Catherine James her husband and law partner of Joseph, Annabelle and Sally. Annabelle has accident with the horse and Joseph shows just how he really feels about her. I think you know what is about to happen with these four people.

Are you feeling some resistance to some of these ideas? If so, you're not alone. There will be those who take exception to Wattle's opening premise and his contention, for instance, that one who does not desire to be rich is abnormal. Wattles may have been speaking from a worldview and paradigm of a young soul (See Turn Your Passion Into Profit for more) and who assumes everyone else thinks the same way, but don't let that turn you off or cause you to miss the overall value of what Wattles offers here.

For those old and mature souls who don't value money to the degree that younger souls do, I suggest you re-title this book in your mind as The Science of Getting Compensated or The Science of Getting Financially Rewarded for Your Passion-Centered Business, and simply substitute the words "compensated" or "rewarded" every time Wattles' uses the word "rich."

At the same time, I also suggest that you make mental note of any resistance you feel at Wattles' words and ask yourself if this resistance is actually a symptom of a resistance to success. Is it possible you're you responding in this way because you were raised to believe that the pursuit of wealth somehow makes you "too materialistic?" Are you responding this way because of all the negative associations about money with which many of us are raised? As I state in the Profit chapter of Turn Your Passion Into Profit:

[Excerpt] If you see money as an expression of the abundance of the wealth that God has created, and that you are entitled to share in, then you will be on your way to wealth. If, on the other hand, you feel money is one of man's evil inventions that is far removed from the realm of the Godly, then you'll surely have a difficult time attracting and accumulating it in your life. For which person wants to be un-Godly in anything they do?[End]

If you are one of the richness resisters, I suggest you continue reading Wattles' words with an open mind. Don't fight these ideas until you determine if indeed you're simply an old soul in a young soul's world, or if, in fact, it's your negative money-programming being activated! Who knows? THIS BOOK WILL TRANSFORM YOUR MIND & YOUR LIFE

Ladies and Gentlemen, this book will without any doubt change your life, by changing your mind about the concept of "money". So many of us were brought up with the idea of money as a finite resource, which you had to compete for. This book is desgined to release every preconcieved idea that is holding us all back from wealth.
The basic premise of this book is that becoming wealthy is a science, that once understood, and replicated will create wealth in everyone's life. Wealth is as infinite as the creative mind. Create ideas, take action and abundance will flow.
I have read over 200 books on success and wealth, before I read this book. Nothing I had read upto this point had such an incrediblely profound effect on my wealth, because it changed my misconceptions on what it took to become wealthy. Within ten months of applying these principles and concepts, I had expedentially increased my income to levels that would had been unthinkable 12 months earlier.
I would reccomend that every student of this book, also read, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Money is Easy by Larry Winget, The Einstien Factor Wenger & Poe, Psyco Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz & Born Rich by Bob Proctor. All these books will enhance your understanding of this incredible book.

Practical, Hands-on Assistance; and Many Original Ideas

This new release is a reprint of the original 1910 edition of Wallace Wattles' guide to financial success and personal growth. Make sure that you get the new 2002 Iceni Books edition, and not some of the other versions that are around, which have been made unusable by editing. Wattles' book is a true classic in the genre, and it has been mentioned along with such other classics like George Clason's "The Richest Man In Babylon" and Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich." It was always a surprise to me, that this book, in full original title "The Science of Getting Rich or Financial Success Through Creative Thought," is less well-known than the titles mentioned above. While Clason's book, in the essence, is a tale about the workings of exponential growth, and Hill's book is little more than the repetition of the formula, "whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve," in Wattles' book there is much more to be found.
Wattles, like Hill, also emphasizes the importance of using one's power of thought, and one's willpower, as an indispensable ingredient on the way to get rich. But Wattles with his suggestions is way ahead of Hill, because he does not think exclusively along egoistical lines, as does Hill. Throughout the book he warns the reader of acquiring riches in a competitive way, and strongly advises to do any business in a creative way instead. He asserts that the reader should never compete for what is already there, but should instead create something of value, be it a product, or a service. This thought alone is a revelation. Wattles makes unmistakably clear that only in that way it is possible for everyone to get rich. Instead of keeping others down by competition, if you strive to get rich in a creative way, you inspire other people to do so as well, and open up a way for others to follow.
Besides this thought, which is original in how to get rich, and self-help literature, Wattles has much other original, yet always practical, advice for his readers, like how to best get into the right business, how to direct thoughts and actions purposefully, how to convey the impression of personal growth, and much more. I am issuing here, however, some kind of a warning to you: Wattles grounds his science on the ideas of oriental philosophies, which state that there exists one original substance in the universe, where all things originate from. To back up that notion, he mentions that this idea was also held by many western philosophers, like Hegel, and Emerson, and requires the reader to accept the truth of this notion by faith. I cannot say that I am a believer in the one substance, and still, I have learned some of my most important lessons from Wattles. So do not be put off by that esoteric concept, but concentrate instead on the solid foundations of financial and personal success that Wattles hands over to you. I am convinced that Wattles in this book says all that you need for success.

Yep -- The Best Ever

I watched the first twenty minutes of the DVD of "The Secret" (it's offered free on their website), and thought it was really hokey. It felt like they were trying to make a "Da Vinci Code" production out of it. To my knowledge, no "authorities throughout history" have ever tried to keep "the Secret" (i.e., the Law of Attraction) from humanity.

But I was curious about the book that inspired "The Secret's" creator, so I checked out Wallace Wattles' "The Science of Getting Rich."

Wow! And Super-Wow! Wattles has nailed all the self-help books (all the great ones anyway) that I've ever read and put it all in one slim volume. And I can state confidently, "This is the foundational book for fulfilling your life. You'll never need to read another one about 'getting the life you want.'"

For those of you who doubt, or just plain ridicule, the idea that you can get what you want by simply focusing on it and ceasing to focus on what you DON'T want, I recommend this experiment:

For one week, carry two little notepads with you, everywhere you go. Each notepad should have a different colored cover so they're easily identifiable. Label one "Positive" and the other "Negative."

As you go through your week, every time you hear, see or feel something positive in your surroundings, put a check mark in the "Positive" notepad. Every time you hear, see or feel something negative in your surroundings, put a checkmark in the "Negative" notepad. Do this for EVERYTHING you take in, whether it involves you personally or not--chats with friends, news reports, conversations you overhear on the bus, etc. If you're taking it in, put a checkmark in the appropriate notepad.

Be sure, especially, to include all the entertainment you see or hear. Be conscious of the story, the lyrics, etc. Is the message negative about life no matter how hilarious or thought-provoking it is? (A great example would be "Borat.") If so, put a checkmark in the "Negative" notepad.

At the end of the week, total the checkmarks in each notepad. If you have more negative checkmarks than positive ones (and I suspect you'll have many more), ask yourself how you can possibly get ANYTHING you want from life when you're taking in all that negativity, day after day? The answer is, you can't--because you don't have the Life Energy for it. All that negativity is draining it out of you.

By focusing only on what your heart desires, and believing unconditionally that those things are yours to have, you connect to the Universe which gave you those desires in the first place, and intends for you to fulfill them, in the name of Creation. As Wattles says again and again, the Universe wants you to have these things even more than you do. But you can't connect to the Universe as long as you're filling your head with the noise and negativity of the outside world.

"The Science of Getting Rich" will show you exactly how to "tune out and tune in," so you can have the wonderful life you were created for.

Give it a try. The only thing you've got to lose is a life you never wanted in the first place.

The memoir is not so much about Fairchild Publications, 430,000 circulation at the peak, as about the remarkable people who made the Fairchild world go 'round. Martindale is among a regiment of distinguished writers who vividly recount how business history is not primarily about products and services but about the daring smart people who seize the day. Roger E. A. Farmer traces the swings between classical and Keynesian economics since the early 20th century, gracefully explaining the elements of both theories. During the Great Depression, Keynes challenged the longstanding idea that an economy was a self-correcting mechanism; but his school gave way to a resurgence of classical economics in the 1970s - a rise that ended with the current crisis.

Rather than simply allowing the pendulum to swing back, Farmer writes, we must synthesize the two. From classical economics, he takes the idea that a sound theory must explain how individuals behave - how our collective choices shape the economy. From Keynesian economics, he adopts the principle that markets do not always work well, that capitalism needs some guidance. Excellent economic work for the layman

"How the Economy Works: Confidence, Crashes and Self-Fulfilling Prophecies" is an excellent summation of the current problems with the world-wide economy (paying close attention to the American economy), summed up well for the layman. Roger E. A. Farmer is a professor at the University of California-Los Angeles, and perhaps because he's worked so often with students, he did his best to stay away from jargon (as he said in his preface) in order to sum up the best-known economic ideas since the mid-1700s through today and give some idea of what the best course of action might be to alleviate further pain and confusion in the future.

Farmer talked about Adam Smith ("On the Wealth of Nations"), David Hume (Scottish philosopher, who wrote a witty piece about how money is used toward the end of the 18th century that still stands up today), Keynes and Keynesian theory (or, put simply, "Why markets don't always work the way they should"), the turn away from Keynesian economics in the late 1970s-early 1980s, and the "New Keynesianism" that has turned up today that is prevalent in the Obama Administration that is trying to take the best of both classical economics (as seen by Smith, et. al.) and Keynes in order to prevent a second Great Depression.

Does this book succeed? Yes, it does; I am not an economist, but I understood every word of this book, and I believe anyone sufficiently motivated can as well. The main issues -- unemployment and why we have it even in a booming economy (which the current one in the US of A _isn't_), the flow of money from consumers to producers and back again as wages and why that doesn't always work to keep the markets going (which is why governments must get involved to regulate in order to prevent certain collapse -- the main idea of Keynesian economics), why the banks failed from 2006-on and had to be propped up world-wide (it wasn't just an American phenomenon by any means, as Farmer points out) . . . it's all here, in a fairly short, 200-some page book.

Note that while the language isn't pedantic, there are some things that are tougher to understand than others -- such as why the unemployment rate remains no matter how well the economy might be doing, and on the uses of the Federal Reserve ("the Fed"). I appreciated his insights; one of the best, and wittiest, that I found was about "the Fed" and how they try to regulate markets -- but as Farmer dryly said, at this point, "the Fed" can't do much to stimulate the economy -- as the interest rate they use to loan money to banks is already zero, they can't go under that. (I laughed out loud at that line; I gave a paraphrase, as I don't have the book in front of me.)

If you've ever been frustrated at the current economy, this book is for you. If you've ever wanted to know what "the Fed" is, or why it does anything at all, this book is for you. If you want to know why it is that no current economy can approach full employment, this book is for you, and if you want to know why we had to have two TARP bills to bail out the banks -- what the rationale was for them, at any rate (Farmer gave the impression in this book that the jury is still out on whether or not the bills will help, though the intentions were good and the bills certainly staved off a direct and catastrophic collapse) -- this book is for you.

This is a book I'll remember for a long, long time; it's going to stay on my reference shelf, and I will be referring to it again and again. It's an excellent work, not overly pedantic, and it explains a great deal that had been opaque to me before.

Well Written Overview of Academic Economics

Roger Farmer is a professor of economics at UCLA. As such, he appears to accept many of main paradigms that define mainstream academic economics, including belief in the importance of mathematics and many of the constructs of Keynsian macroeconomics and Walrasian general equilibrium. What makes his book How the Economy Works particularly valuable is its overview of some of the main lines of thinking that define academic economics, starting with Hume and Adam Smith and concluding with excellent, brief discussions of Lucas, Prescott, and Kydland. Professor Farmer thankfully avoids any mathematics or pedantic jargon. Indeed, the book is quite well written, so that just about any intelligent reader, whether economically literate or not, can profit from reading it. For those interesting in imbibing a brief outline of mainstream academic economics, I cannot think of a better work.

In the second half of his brief tome, Professor Farmer introduces his own theory concerning the cause of business cycles. Farmer tries to synthesize the two main positions that have dominated modern economics: classical and Keynesian economics. He takes from Keynes the notion that markets do not always work. "In the real world, confidence determines wealth, wealth determines demand, and demand determines employment," Farmer tells us. This doesn't strike me as very convincing. Usually, there's a very good reason why investors and businessmen lose confidence: namely, because the fundamentals of the economy are so deplorable. I suspect that, like most academic economists, Professor Farmer's has only a superficial, over-generalized understanding of the pricing system, so that he doesn't entirely grasp what leads to the market failure he attempts to in his theory to explain. The trouble with the sort of mathematical and macroeconomic approaches popular in mainstream economics is that they create a kind of tunnel vision that blinds the individual to whatever phenomenon cannot be adequately understood by such constructs. The primary problem with the economy has little to do with Keynesian or Chicago-orientated constructs, both of which will mislead more than they enlighten. Nor does it have much to do with lack of confidence or a systematic disconnect between employers wishing to hire and the unemployed, as Farmer suggests. No, what ails the economy is all the toxic debt created by credit expansion and over-leveraged finance. It's very hard for investors, financiers, and businessmen to proceed with confidence when there exists trillions of dollars of suspect debt floating around, threatening to bring the entire financial system to its knees. I don't recall ever running across any mention in Professor Farmer's book of the massive credit bubble that fueled both the stock market and housing bubbles; nor does he have much to say regarding all the toxic debt which precipitated last years crisis in the markets. But therein lies the heart of the problem.

Still, it is interesting to get a glimpse into the mind and thought of one our best, and perhaps most readable, academic economists. Despite my reservations about Professor Farmer's business cycle theory, his book is well worth reading for those interested in the subject.

Great intro to economics: both theory and practice

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's written for the non-economist, and no prior knowledge of economics is assumed or required. The author balances his time between explaining the history of economics, including key historical figures, key concepts, and (most importantly) how all of that "theory" stuff relates to what actually happens in the real world. There's plenty of discussion of our modern economic crisis, and the author proposes a solution that, while it seems novel, I'm not sure I'm willing to judge (it has to do with the central bank using index funds to prop up the economy in critical times). There's plenty of discussion of both classical and Keynesian economics (both the strengths and the weaknesses of each). Anyway, an excellent primer on economic thought and practice. Well-written, and not terribly long... makes for an informative and enjoyable read.
