Enjoyable, Readable Ride into the Sky

There are a lot of aviation history books, and if you are really interested in the subject many of them are much better than this one. But so many of them are a little dry, and this has something unique - Branson's voice. "My version of the history of flight . . . Everything in this book is true enough--but it doesn't try to tell the whole story." It is an enjoyable, readable ride focusing as the subtitle states on balloons, birdmen and space. Like early barnstormers (or Wernher von Braun appearing on Disney TV shows) the story is part sales pitch. Can't afford $200,000 for a Virgin Galatic sub-orbital ride into space? You'd love a Virgin balloon flight! But the passion and insider viewpoint also drive a more personal, easy to read, ride around the sky.

UK readers may recognize the title as being the same as Paul Brickhill's biography of RAF fighter pilot hero Douglas Bader. It's not an accident. As a kid Branson played with Bader's false legs and learnt life lessons from the famous Spitfire pilot. If there had been more personal stories, more insights straight from Branson about flying with Steve Fossett or Burt Rutan I'd have given it five stars. As it is, the book is good just not great. While no coauthor is listed, my guess is that he had considerable editorial help putting the book together. It's nicely illustrated and fully indexed. However, sometimes the joins start to show. Consider these couple of sentences from Tom Vanderbilt's book Survival City (2010):

In 1858, Gaspard Felix Tounachon (known as "Nadar"), sailing 258 feet above the valley of Bièvre, captured a daguerreotype of the Earth below, blurred by the vibrations of the balloon. "We have had bird's-eye views seen by mind's eye imperfectly," he wrote. "Now we will have nothing less than the tracings of nature itself, reflected on the plate."

Now compare to Branson's Reach for the Skies (2011):

In 1858, the photographer Nadar (his real name was Gaspard Felix Tounachon) sailed 258 feet above the valley of Bièvre in France and captured a daguerreotype - an early photograph -- of the Earth below, blurred by the vibrations of the balloon. Still, I really enjoyed reading a (mostly) fresh perspective on some of the more thrilling stories of ballooning and birdman, and look forward to watching Virgin Galactic blast off.

Richard Branson is a very interesting man. He is not a know it all but a does it all. This mans life is amazing. He has such great interest in the world around him and it just so happens he likes what I like; Music and aviaton. This guy rocks in both. Super read. Thanks, Rick L.

This book is excellent and is based on Brian's "Think Big" cassette series by Nightingale-Conant. I would recommend that you read this after or with Maximum Achievement. MA is more complete, but this one has newer material and will help you Think Big and achieve results.

The Textbook On Success

The first time I heard Brian Tracy I thought he was awfully dull. Then I started to listen to his message and the ideas and concepts sank in. An awful lot of material is common sense and borrowed from other's ideas --- but what success literature isn't?
The things that you might find useful about Brian Tracy are:
- The ideas are all concise and to the point. These are easy reads and you don't get a lot of extraneous storytelling or religious fanaticism.
- His audio tapes mirror his writing. They are concise and contain many powerful yet simple concepts (How about his concept of repeating "I am responsible" over and over -- simple huh? Could never work, right? Try it!). Some of Brian's simplest concepts work great.
This particular book, Create Your Own Future, is almost a transcript of his great tape series - The Luck Factor. This is a great opportunity to get a nice written summary of Brian's ideas after listening to the tapes. I really enjoy that he has broken up the ideas into short manageable bits.
Give his books a try. They contain all of the success "secrets" in an easily readible format. Highly recommended (I have almost all of them).

About the Author
Suzette Glasner-Edwards, PhD, is associate professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She also maintains a private practice where she specializes in the use of cognitive behavioral, motivational, and mindfulness-based techniques to treat addictions and mental health problems.

Foreword writer Richard A. Rawson, PhD, is professor in residence in the department of psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and codirector of the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs. He has worked in the substance abuse field since 1974. Rawson started the Matrix Institute on Addictions and conducts training on topics including basic principles of addiction and addiction treatment for counselors, MFCCs, psychologists, and physicians, and much more.

I can see her Responsibility talent shining through--that she feels an obligation to share this with others (even if it feels scary and risky) so they, too, can believe in their futures. Due to geographic proximity, I am surrounded by evidence of the historical fur trade of the great northwest. This book serves to fill in all the gaps about the animals trapped, their pelts and grading. It is best thought of as a go-to resource book for reenactors or scholars looking for first hand authoritative information from a reliable source. Both old enough to be authentic and new enough to be comprehensible to the modern reader. Not for the meat is murder crowd, by any means, and doubtfully a page turner for many. But As my title says, for arm chair historians interested in the historic fur trade, this is a must have. Bonus chapters on roots n "yarbs".

Wish I'd learned this earlier!

This is the wisdom I wish I'd had getting out of grad school! Nelsa talks to you like an older sister who's lived it and knows what's going on. She doesn't say it will be easy, but makes it very clear that you can and you must do the hard work now if you want to be financially secure later on. If you want to make your money work for you instead of always working for your money, and enjoy the life you want, the only way to do it is learn these principles and make them second nature.

She was equally influential, in both her professional and personal lives, in spreading the cult of managerial efficiency to the intimate sphere of home and child rearing. The mother of 12 children (immortalized in the classic Cheaper by the Dozen), the perpetually pregnant engineer demonstrated that, with the Taylorite organizational methods she pioneered on the factory floor (and the assistance of live-in relatives and paid help), women could combine career, marriage and family on an epic scale. Historian Lancaster (Inquire Within) has penned an absorbing, psychologically acute biography that links Gilbreth’s career and embrace of "the strenuous life" with the Progressive Era’s conflicted ideas about gender and the rise of the "New Woman." An engineer, a management consultant, a professor, a government advisor, and a pioneer in the innovative field of time and motion studies, Gilbreth was much more than a mere shadow of her celebrated husband. The working mother of 11 children--one died of diphtheria--she artfully juggled her responsibilities as a career woman and as a mother decades before it became acceptable or fashionable to do so. Continuing to work until her death at age 90, she made immeasurable contributions to both industrial and household management. Through it all, she managed the seemingly impossible, successfully interweaving and integrating her public and private personas into an inspiring model of efficiency and efficacy. Carefully scrutinized, very well written

The work of the Gilbreth couple has been influencing the way people work both in industry and at home since the beginning of the last century; and this influence has been quite underestimated, mainly because of the lasting succes of the books "Cheaper By the Dozen" and "Belles on Their Toes". The time has come to write a both thorough and neutral review on this work and to show the driving forces behind it. I am very pleased to say that Jane Lancaster with her book "Making Time" wrote this perfect review, which is carefully researched from the scientific point of view and very well written for the reader's pleasure.

Ms Lancaster delivers several things: (1) A precise and complete description of the life of both Gilbreths (which of course is mostly the life of Lillian M. Gilbreth, because she survived her husband by almost 50 years). (2) A neutral evaluation of this work, where she points out that most of Gilbreth's work was outlined and carried out by Lillian M. Gilbreth, although Ms Gilbreth kept herself in the background during the life of her husband. (3) The creation of a well-deserved attention for the work of Ms Gilbreth beyond her (not neglectable at all!) role of a mother of 13.

Having dealt with the work of the Gilbreth couple for more than 20 years, I highly recommend Jane Lancaster's book both for reading pleasure and for scientific work. "Making Time", in my opinion, sets the standards for the research on the work of the Gilbreth.

Excellent bio of a woman well remembered for the wrong thing

Lillian Moller Gilbreth is well remembered today as the patient mother of "Cheaper by the Dozen". This book makes it clear that this was the least of her attributes.
Dr. Gilbreth spent over a half century as one of America's leading engineers. First colloborating with her husband, Frank Gilbreth, she spent the first forty years of her widowhood on an intense schedule of conferences, consulting, and teaching, finally retiring near her ninetieth birthday.
While the primary focus of this book is on Dr. Gilbreth and her engineering career, and the conculsion makes clear author Jane Lancaster's bitterness that Dr. Gilbreth is best remembered for the fictionalized mother of "Cheaper by the Dozen", fans of the book will find material to satisfy them. Several chapters deal with the family's life. Few of the many footnotes are simply to "Cheaper" or its sequel, "Belles on their Toes"--appropriate, as a later chapter deals with how "Cheaper" came to be, and that it was written not as non-fiction, but rather as things should have been. For example, the episode in "Cheaper" where Dr. Gilbreth spent a day in bed, and the children were convinced that a new baby was due, having associated Mother's brief bedstays with childbirth, was based on Dr. Gilbreth giving birth to a stillborn, thirteenth child.
Jane Lancaster gives life to this pioneering woman engineer, unfortunately typecast by her children's books. Highly recommended.

Mercy maude, what a biography!

"This is funny, you might like it."

That suggestion from a long-ago English teacher introduced me to a book called "Cheaper By The Dozen," which in turn kicked off a lengthy fascination with the Gilbreth family and their other books. Along the way, I got a taste of the fact that Lillian Moller Gilbreth was among the more important women of her generation, up there with Marie Curie and Eleanor Roosevelt. But, as other Gilbreth-philes surely know, her children's writings only hinted at that importance, concentrating instead on her role as the family matriarch. This, the first full-length biography not written by a family member, is therefore a welcome addition to the already sizeable collection of books about the Gilbreths.

Jane Lancaster's research is very impressive, as is her ability to overcome the surviving Gilbreth children's noted concern for their privacy. Through over a century's worth of private letters and papers, she provides a surprisingly vivid look at the family you thought you knew as a kid. More importantly, she provides a well-rounded look at Lillian Gilbreth, who even in early life was not nearly the demure introvert so often portrayed elsewhere.

Though very much a product of her 19th century upper crust California childhood, she was quite independent minded from the beginning, as reflected in her decision to go to college, get married and move East while most of her siblings never left home. A lifelong Republican and a close friend of Herbert Hoover, she was nonetheless an early and effective advocate of workplace safety regulations, paid breaks, eight-hour workdays and, of course, women's right to work outside the home. (Oddly, Lancaster makes no mention of Gilbreth's views on women's suffrage, by far the most prominent feminist issue of the era.) In earning a PhD, she overcame not only sexism and the responsibilities of a large family, but a "lost" dissertation as well.

There are also more stories of the children, although few of them are as lighthearted as the ones you already know. Chances are you'd already figured out that "Cheaper By The Dozen" and "Belles On Their Toes" were a couple of idealized memoirs, but if not, prepare to have your bubble burst! Lillian's long absences from home after Frank's death were quite hard on some of the younger children, and Lancaster suggests (without going into much detail) that many of their childhood memories were not all that rosy. Still, Lillian's heroic role in keeping the large family together through hard times comes through everywhere.

I do find Lancaster's thesis - that Mrs. Gilbreth's reputation was shortchanged through her simplistic portrayal in "Cheaper" - slightly unfair. As at least four generations of middle-schoolers know, that book ends with Mother choosing to soldier on with Dad's business after his death and to continue raising all her children on her own. That was no small undertaking for a woman in 1924 or for a single parent of eleven children in any era. (If anything, it gives her slightly more credit than is due: Lancaster reveals here that she briefly sent one daughter to live with her grandmother in California.) The admittedly less-remembered "Belles On Their Toes" and "Time Out For Happiness" are both loaded down with accolades for her achievements both at home and professionally. Also, engineering is not like music, sports, art, or literature - the geniuses of the field, male or female, are generally remembered only by people who practice it. Still, Lancaster does have a point that this pioneering giant of her profession is too often remembered only as a doting mother. And she's done a great job of helping to change that.

Great Book Loved it. I read the first book, then this one the 2nd book in the series. I can't wait to read the baby sisters romance. How God answered the prayers of pure heart prayers. I love the Christian mail order brides and romance. I really like that the intimate details are not blazed in every detail. It's hard to find good clean books for reading. A17trina

I really enjoyed this book. Very clean. Strong headed woman finds love but has to struggle for it. Engaging characters and good situations. Highly recommend. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
