About the Author
George Verdolaga is a prolific author & speaker. His two biggest passions are teaching and helping people get out of their own way so that they can reach their personal, career or business objectives as quickly and painlessly as possible.
In 1999, George established Flowform Design Group, a residential interior design company. When the recession of 2008 hit the global economy, George saw many people get laid off and attempt to get back on their feet by blanketing the entire city with their resumes and getting no callbacks. As a result, George created the Sitting Pretty Home Study Course, based on his experience of successfully finding work in places like Manila, Milan, New York, and Vancouver in as little as 11 days by going through the back door and talking directly to decision-makers who had the power to hire him on the spot.
After the 2008 recession happened, many 20- to 30-year company veterans found themselves out of work and unable to land a new job. As a result, George wrote The Contractor Lifestyle to show careerists how they can have jobs for life by adopting an entrepreneurial mindset while they work for other people. More recently, George created The Job Farmer, where he shares the most effective way to find work or get business clients by farming rather than hunting . George wrote his third book, called The Maverick Effect, to show potential innovators and change-makers that whatever hardships they re currently experiencing is simply preparation for the leadership role that they will assume later on in life

The Maverick Effect: THREE Thumbs Up! (If you're wondering how that's possible - then read the book)
By Rodrigo Nepomuceno
As an marketing, media and advertising practitioner, I've read quite a number of books on thought leadership, harnessing your inner creativity, overcoming obstacles and limitations, thinking out of the box, searching for your passion, USPs (unique selling propositions), the paths to excellence, changing the world, making an impact, etc. So when I was encouraged to get a copy of this book, I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical. I initially thought to myself, "Oh, I'm sure this is going to be not much different from all the other books I've read in the past - with all the catch-phrases, standard quotes, usual anecdotes and motivational cliches.
But as I flipped through the first few pages, I found myself getting more and more intrigued. Before I knew it, I was totally engrossed by it. I literally couldn't put it down. I had an appointment with my barber and I had planned to take a break from reading the book once it was time to go. Instead, I ended up bringing the book - and I kept on reading it, even as my barber clipped away and strands of hair were falling on my e-book.
I guess what made the book so interesting for me was that it was very relatable. I think most of us, at one point in our lives (in all likelihood, more than one point in our lives), have been bullied, looked down upon, questioned, doubted, and ridiculed. All of us wanted to be THAT hipster -- that cool guy (or girl) in school who always seemed to be liked by everyone. To avoid being picked on, we followed that hipster. Sadly, the result for all of us was the same: following the hip dude didn't do us any good.
I've known the author (George Verdolaga) since we were six. And I must admit, I've always been a bit jealous of him because he always seemed to be his own man. While I always tended to hang out with the same group of people (with whom I have become quite comfortable with), George was always hanging out with different people. He never defined himself with one particular friend, or one specific group. One day he would hang out with my friends; the next day he'll be hanging out with another group. He always seemed to be searching -- not in a confused kind of way. He had this aura of confidence in him that seemed to exude this "I'm-in-full-control" and "I-know-exactly-what-I'm-doing" aura.
That's why it was a bit of a surprise for me to learn (from reading the book) that in the initial years after graduating from college, George found himself in a situation where he was not entirely comfortable. To some extent, he wasn't sure of what to do because he felt the need to please his parents - and perhaps, society. He knew, however, that things weren't right. It was in his gut. He knew he had to do something - something different. He knew he had to leave the line -- the line that led to conformity and mediocrity. He had to be a maverick.
To some extent, I can totally relate to the life journey of George. In my own life, I had to leave my comfort zone and think out of the box. But not because that's how I planned it. I did it because it was the only way I could survive. I was a lost soul right out of high school. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I drifted in different directions for the next ten years after high school. The only way I could put order in my life was to think out of the box and be radically different from the people around me.
Just like George, I was influenced by my parents to take a college course which wasn't exactly my field of expertise: computer science. From Day 1, I hated it. Soon, I found myself shifting to another course. I took up Business Management - only because I couldn't think of anything better to take up. After going on cruise control and graduating, I worked in IBM. I instantly knew it wasn't for me. So, not knowing what to do, I took up law. Four years later, I became a lawyer. Two years into practice, it dawned on me that litigation was not for me. I got into retail marketing. Then I got into sports marketing. Then media hosting. Then news anchoring. Then advertising. And now, I am in media advertising sales, microfinancing, and TV hosting. And I love it. It took me awhile to find out what I wanted. But if I did not live by the maverick principles espoused by George in his book, I never would have found my passion.
The Maverick Effect represents two things for me: a quasi biography AND a practical handbook. To this day, I am still searching. I am far from satisfied. I still want to learn. And I still want to try different things. Life is a constant journey of trying to change things, improving things, and making a positive contribution in the world. The only way to do that is to be a catalyst for change - i.e, to be a maverick. We can't keep on following. We have to take the lead. And George's book provides you with all of the answers.
To George -- kudos on this amazing book. I give it THREE thumbs up.
I know that's not possible.
But I won't let anyone tell me that.

Inspiring & motivating....
By sue clement
Love this book! George Verdolaga has done a masterful job enlightening the reader about what it takes to be a true innovator. If you've ever been bullied, shunned, rejected, or even just picked on or criticized, this book will inspire you to keep on going and sharing your passions in spite of what others may think or say. It shows you that you are clearly in good company! The stories woven throughout the book are truly inspiring, and provide a new found sense of determination and compelling desire to persevere in spite of hardship and ridicule.
George provides words of wisdom on how to develop & embrace one's inner Maverick to become a leader and innovator. A must read for any entrepreneur, not to mention any young person who dares to be different and pursue his or her own goals and dreams. I would have loved to have this insight back in my twenties while struggling with the inner conflict of standing out while trying to fit in. It would have made a life easier, to have embraced the Maverick within rather than trying to hide or deny it.

I love how the book validated my own beliefs
By Theresa A.
As someone who is experiencing some changes in life, reading the book was very timely and helpful.
1. I was able to relate to a lot of the situations George mentioned in the book. Bullying in the workplace is real. If it is something you are encountering, The Maverick Effect suggests ways on how you can deal with the bullies and overcome the situation.
2. I love how the book validated my own beliefs.
a. Sticking to your guns. There’s nothing better than doing something you have the passion for.
b. Failing. I’ve always believed that failing makes one work harder and success even sweeter.
c. Intelligence vs. Hard work. You don’t necessarily have to be intelligent to be successful. You need to work hard and follow your own path to success.
3. I really like how George was able to weave in and support each topic with real life examples and proofs so the reader gets a better grasp of the situation. Because the examples are very interesting, they made the book such an easy read. Sometimes, how-to books become too heavy when the tone is preachy but The Maverick Effect didn’t feel that way at all.
4. Lastly, I like how I learned something new about the author with the experiences he shared. I really like how he practices what he calls – “the single standard".
Overall, I give The Maverick Effect a thumbs up. It is good for students or anyone who is experiencing changes in his/her life or people who are in a cross road. It’s really about taking the wheel and carving out your own path to success.
