You must buy it!

This book has been a great help to me and everyone else in my company. Put simply, it has paid for itself many times over.
Let's take emails as just one example of how it has helped us save time, money – and our brand. Every day we have to write numerous emails. Now, instead of wasting time staring at our screens thinking about how to say something, we just list our ideas, one per line. Then – with our new understanding of how the creative process works, and of how our minds work in it – we return to the ideas that we listed and start putting these into a formative structure. Then we flesh out our structure, adding more detail. Next, we revise it again, checking that we are happy that we have said what we wanted to say. Lastly, we edit what we have written, using our new understanding of language structuring and punctuation.
We have also formulated and implemented the styles suggested in the handbook. The result? We send better emails that take less time to write. The written aspects of our brands are consistent, and as a result, convey an image of professionalism. Imagine the impact that this is having across all of our documentation and marketing messages – press releases, blogs, adverts, to name a few.
I am also using the information on the creative process, mind states and brain modes, together with writing, as a means of getting my ideas out of my head so that I can reflect on them and work with them. Now my mind is uncluttered and able to generate more ideas. My planning and strategizing have improved enormously as a result.

Altogether this is an exceptionally useful and succinct handbook on writing and the creative process

This little book manages to integrate, with remarkable succinctness, a philosophy of writing (and potentially of living) with highly practical observations on implementation, drawing, for example, on the languages of both project management ('initiation, planning, execution, closure') and the mythology of the elements (water, air, earth, fire). In an acute and sympathetic account of 'the natural creative process', de la Porte makes clear that the rational, analytic, organising power of the mind is not (or does not need to be) at odds with our imaginative, associative capacity; rather, they make up - in infinitely varying proportions in different individuals and in different stages - complementary aspects of a process that is accessible to all of us. Sense and sensibility, form and freedom: each of us is working on finding the balance that is our own.
Having established both the inevitability and the excitement of this balancing act, de la Porte provides practical and sympathetic guidelines on the kinds of mind states that are likely to be most helpful at any given stage of the creative process. This is followed by detailed and exceptionally well informed sections on 'Language structuring' (not only the broad structures of sentences and paragraphing, but particular elements of grammar and syntax), 'Punctuation' (the fullest practical overview of this neglected area of language use that I have come across) and 'Editing checklists' (briefly pulling together all the elements previously discussed).
Altogether this is an exceptionally useful and succinct handbook on writing and the creative process.

Great book for writers and aspiring writers alike

This is an exceptional all-round handbook on writing. I bought it for my family and myself because I knew that we could all refer to it in all of our everyday writing tasks: emails, documents, helping with homework – all the reasons any family would need a good handbook on the writing process that also provides all the tools used by everyday writers. It now has pride of place on our reference bookshelf. I highly recommend this writing handbook – no family should be without it.
