Simple, and not so simple

At first I thought this book’s presentation was oversimplified. By the end of it, I’d pretty much bought into oversimplification as a good thing, as well as had to concede that there was a lot of very fine detail there too. Here’s the thing. One of the things I thought was oversimplified was the presentation of solar energy. There’s not much discussion of the possibilities of homebased solar energy systems, nor of partial/hybrid solar systems, nor about the difficulties of maintenance.
In general the discussion of electricity is assumed to be at the large-scale/grid level when some of the supply difficulties in remote areas might be dealt with better by smaller-scale individual systems. Which could go for nuclear systems too. He makes such a good case about Small Modular Reactors that I’m a believer, and just based on what he writes I can imagine all sorts of smaller-scale useful applications. But back to solar for a minute. Yes, he doesn’t go into much detail about it, but since the details he does give are so deal-breaking (if that’s a word), why clutter up the book/take up extra pages telling us every last detail about solar energy when it’s just not a viable contender?
And then I had to admit that, to my criticism of oversimplification, there is plenty of detail in the book. It’s sort of like you have to go with the author’s take on the right answers to his questions—and it’s his book, so that seems reasonable enough—but if you go along with it, you get to see reasons why aplenty. And I have to say, for a book with the word “future” in the title and the brief of making predictions, this contains a great number of facts about the present that I for one had no idea about. I’m not even talking about the busting of myths surrounding nuclear power and ethanol production. Try something like the fact that there are already 438 nuclear reactors in operation worldwide. I had no idea there were that many, let alone that many more have been approved. Sometimes facts about the present make a big difference to what you think might happen in the future.

Clean Energy

I hope it won’t be a spoiler if I say a bit about his treatment of the two “teams” judged the most important and identify those as nuclear and ethanol. Since these are the two he’s advocating for, they naturally receive the bulk of attention in the book, and in each case I was impressed by the breadth and depth of the details covered. We’re talking about details from the imponderables of increasing corn yields to the fine details of the differences between power-generating uranium and weapons-grade uranium (and yes, it’s worth saying again—these two are absolutely not the same). These are not just details about the present situation but clear-eyed predictions of how these “teams” may advance in the future, or coverage of innovations with them that I hadn’t yet read about anywhere else.
Obviously this is an arena in which innovations are almost out of date when they’re two years old, but this will remain an extremely valuable book for its tracking so precisely the state of the art (or the state of the science?) for right now in the mid-teens of the 21st century.

Everyone should read this book!

In a very creative and unusual twist, Gary Schwendiman presents the cases of the different energy providers as if each of them were a football team competing to be the best electricity or fuel source. I hadn’t seen a presentation like this before and found it quite entertaining. More importantly, he managed to keep the metaphors clear, by which I was suitably impressed—not everyone might realize how easy it would have been to lead the reader astray with extended metaphors, mixing up singulars and plurals, applying football terminology to electricity or vice versa, just the sort of errors that are the hardest for even a good editor to catch at that. But he managed it! Entertained and not confused—can’t ask for better than that.
