Constance

Mrs. Carroll always write such complex characters that makes you want to dig deep in understanding them. Drake missing his other half is searching for what he do not know. Constance having been left alone at an early age retreated into the comforts of herself. Together they emerge together in love. I love this story as all of Mrs. Carroll stories. She brings depth and meaning that makes the readers smile.

The Florida Bride

Constance Penny was meek and afraid. Sometimes she thought of herself as a mouse, hiding in the shadows. She came to America with her parents when she was five years old. Her mother got sick on the ship and Constance was left to tend to herself while her father took care of her mother. She felt wild and free and brave on that voyage. Her mother died soon after they arrived. Her father died when she was fourteen. She was left with five dollars. Constance quickly found a job at the clothing factory and worked there for ten years until the fire. Somehow, in those years between the voyage and her father's death, Constance had lost herself. She had turned from a confident lioness into a squeaky mouse. She had waited so long wondering what to do, that she feared there would be no groom left for her. Most of the ads in the Groom's' Gazette were already crossed out. But she found a short ad from E Ferris in Florida and she answered that.
E Ferris was Ethan Ferris, the eldest son of Evan Ferris, the owner of Ferris and Sons mercantile. He had two brothers Edgar and Edwin. Ethan loved the sea. He didn't want to work in the store. He felt apart from his family. He insisted on being called Drake after Sir Francis Drake. His father told Drake that, if he married, he would be given his inheritance and his freedom. So Drake sent money to Constance Penny to come to Florida on a ship called "Jouney's End."
And somehow, on that journey, Constance found her inner lioness.
I really enjoyed this story of two, very different souls, who were both so alone. Together they were complete. But first they had to know themselves and then, to know each other.
I recommend this story to all who love a good love story with bold, brave people. Jump on the American Mail Order Bride train . You will enjoy the ride!

"A jewel and a treasure"

An unusual and touching historical romance with fully-realized and complex characters, Patricia PacJac Carroll's CONSTANCE: BRIDE OF FLORIDA begins slowly but quickly draws the reader into the lives of Constance and Drake. Although they do not meet until nearly halfway through the book, which perhaps is a bit too long, the separation does allow the reader to get to know both characters and experience some of their growth as individuals before they must contend with each other and with the realization of their seemingly divergent dreams.
I thoroughly enjoyed CONSTANCE and found it written with grace and insight. A heartfelt story.
