Practical, dense, but also oddly styled

Practical, honest advice on how to navigate the business world, in a dense, somewhat unpolished package.
Pro: honest advice. The author’s choice to use a pseudonym (with the assumption being that she wanted to be frank without it haunting her) allowed her to be rather brutally honest, which is definitely a plus for this book. Her advice comes from a pretty conservative viewpoint, but I don’t think this is a drawback. The author’s point is often that you may not think that the actions she’s suggesting are not “fair” or “right”, but you have to acknowledge that others (often 40–70 year old men) will judge you not on YOUR values, but on THEIRS. For example, the author states that you shouldn’t make idle “girly” chit-chat at the office where others can hear you, shouldn’t bring in your baby, should think very carefully before filing personnel complaints, etc. The idea is that to others (fairly or unfairly), such things may harm your professional image. The assumption is that yes, sexism is alive and well, and it’s best to avoid triggering it whenever possible. This is somewhat saddening but honest advice. This isn’t to say that the author’s advice is not to be feminine. It’s just pointing out that if you do things differently from your male colleagues, then you will be perceived differently from them. Sad, but true.
Pro: Varied practical tips. The book has practical tips on many (perhaps too many) subjects, from how to build a business wardrobe to how to deal with high-travel careers to how to choose your career path. The variety of topics is both a strength and a weakness. There’s a lot of info, but it does feel a bit catch-all, as if the author was noting down every possible bit of advice she ever gave anyone. Also, some areas aren’t covered very thoroughly, leaving me feeling that the author had cast such a wide net that she felt the need to cover that topic but didn’t have much experience with it to share other than “investigate your options”, which wasn’t terribly helpful.
Con: Dense, stream-of-consciousness style and odd tone. I felt the book’s tone and style suffered from a lack of polish. The advice comes across as lists inside lists, dense and stream-of-consciousness but not terribly good at connecting to the reader. It uses a lot (and I mean A LOT) of imperative sentences with very few transitions for paragraphs and paragraphs, making it feel choppy and demanding. I found myself wishing for more “restful” examples/stories to be sprinkled within. (Oddly, the author put a section at the back that described some successful women at varying parts of their careers: but just…described them. I think the idea was so that you could see how there was no one “path to success”, but it would have been more interesting if those women’s experiences had been sprinkled throughout the book to break up all the direct advice.) Also, some advice was presented in multiple places as if for the first time, which added to the stream-of-consciousness impression and took away from the cohesiveness of the book.

A detailed, easy-to-read guide for go-getters. This book won't talk down to you, but will show you how to bring your best.

This super practical guide is basically about how to invest in yourself in order to achieve the life you want. The advice and suggestions are clear and realistic and cover almost every aspect of career development and implementation. Topics range from how to assess your own value proposition in a particular industry and how to strategically transition to a new career, to what to pack for a business trip and how to avoid "stressful stress reduction". Despite the wide range of subjects, the book's content is presented in a concise and logical manner that makes the information easy to take in. I was particularly pleased that the author regularly provided suggestions for further reading on various subjects; as I read, I made a list of other books I'd like to pick up.
On the Way is definitely written for go-getters. It presumes that the reader will commit at least some extra effort in order to define and achieve goals. As a result it avoids the whiff of condescension that sometimes comes with self-help books. Instead, the tone is at once understanding and demanding -- recognizing that smart, strategic career moves combined with effective self-care and time management are the best recipe for success. Anyone interested in achieving their true potential will find no shortage of constructive ways to pursue the goal. While the book may be particularly useful for women in the corporate sector, as someone whose entire career is based in the nonprofit world, I found it to be incredibly helpful nonetheless. There's an acknowledgement all along the way that successful careers can take many different forms, and that the trick is to figure out what works for you and how best to make yourself valuable in that sector. I highly recommend this read.

best work practices

I was given a copy of this book from the author whom I met online. It is a long book at around 300 pages and to be honest, I didn't expect to get as much out of it as I did! This book is written primarily as guide for working women in the professional world, offering comprehensive sections on choosing a career, schooling, building a resume, job applications, interviews, best work practices, office interactions, career mapping and so much more. However, what I didn't expect was all the other useful information that is relevant to every woman including useful tips on time management, childcare, finances, medical, sleep, leisure time, stress management etc. and it even includes tips on how to find and choose an ideal partner. The book provided a good reminder that you can't be everything. Lake says that no one job is a career. Your talents + opportunities + interests = career. She also reminds us of the importance of self care and joy. There is so much great information in this comprehensive book that I can't possibly mention it all. Highly recommended for any working woman!
