About the Author
Yoram Hazony is President of the Herzl Institute in Jerusalem. He is author of The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture (2012) and The Jewish State: The Struggle for Israel's Soul (2000). Hazony directs the John Templeton Foundation's project in Jewish Philosophical Theology and is a member of the Israel Council for Higher Education's committee on liberal studies in Israel's universities.

A Rare Book that Changed My Life

There are not many books that I would say have changed my life, but Yoram Hazony's "The Dawn" (now revised and re-issued as "God and Politics in Esther") would be one of those very few. The Book of Esther was familiar to me from years of observance of the Jewish holiday of Purim during which the Book of Esther is read twice. To the extent I would think of it from one Purim holiday to the next, it would be for the compelling story of its four central characters: Esther, her uncle, the king and his power-mad senior aide. Shortly after "The Dawn" was published about 20 years ago, a friend sent it to me and I read it, without much impact. A few years later, almost by chance, I decided to re-read it to attempt to make an upcoming Purim holiday more meaningful. Upon finishing that second reading, I decided to become involved in politics and have been a political activist ever since. I shared the book with a Congressman who told me he was retiring (at a young age) from politics and after reading it, this non-Jew ended up running for the US Senate and is a Senator today. I've since read "The Dawn" and now "God and Politics in Esther" several more times. With each re-reading, I am startled by the layers of nuance, texture and insight provided by the author. Instead of being read as a holy book, it is a call to action. It says that access to power is only of use if it is to be used for some greater good than personal ambition, ego or greed. "God and Politics in Esther" may be the most significant political science book you will ever read.

A world-changing book by an excellent scholar, writer, and thinker

I'm thrilled that this very important book has been re-issued by Cambridge University Press in a revised and expanded edition for its 20th anniversary, in paperback and e-book versions as well. After studying The Book of Esther in so many different educational settings, I have never learned so much about the classic tale as I did from this groundbreaking book. I especially admire Hazony's logical analysis of the sequence of events through a careful study of the language and subtlety of the text. He brings the world and milieu of ancient Persia to life, while at the same time making the story as interesting as a modern tale of power, greed, and heroism. Aside from that, Hazony proves not only an excellent writer and scholar, but a truly wise thinker as well. The lessons he gleans from his ingenious commentary are ones that I hope will inspire Jewish leaders today. Personally, my worldview has been vastly influenced by this book, especially by Hazony's iconoclastic idea that there are no real coincidences in The Book of Esther, but that it is through our brave action and daring that we individuals - men and women - can change the world. MUST READ!

Thought-provoking and beautifully written.

The modern celebration of the Jewish holiday of Purim tends to emphasize Esther and Mordechai’s bravery and cunning, leading to the defeat and hanging of Haman, enemy of the Jewish people. It’s a merry holiday – drinking alcohol and dressing the kids in costumes is part of the celebration. But Yoram Hazony wants us to take the story of Esther more seriously. His project is to revive Esther’s significance not only in terms of theology but, perhaps even more importantly, as political philosophy. How are Jews to survive as a minority in the diaspora? How should Jews relate to those who hold political power? How do they attain political power themselves? And how should they exercise that power in such a way as to ensure their survival? And most importantly, what are the moral implications of getting involved with the dirty, impure world of politics, or even worse, violence and war? These are fascinating questions Hazony raises, and to his great credit, he answers them with well-reasoned and beautifully written arguments.
Esther's similarities with Machiavelli’s Prince are tantalizing. The author discusses these similarities at some length while correctly identifying differences, particularly the role of faith in human action. Like some parts of The Prince, parts of Esther may be disturbing to modern readers. People tend to overlook or ignore the fact that celebration occurs not when Haman is hanged, but only after the Jews of Persia fight back against Haman’s allies in the empire, killing 75,000 of them. This leads to an extended discussion of the difference between morality and purity, and how too much emphasis on the latter may harm the cause of the former in political affairs.
Another theme is the relationship between authoritarianism and anti-Semitism. They are connected, and this has been true throughout history, including the present day. To the absolutist ruler, the presence of a minority in covenant with one God (rejecting idolatry) is intolerable, even if that minority is weak. The six pages of text Hazony uses to trace this phenomenon back to Exodus contain the best explanation of anti-Semitism I have ever read.
The book finishes with a critique of the view that God acts in the world through miracles or interventions in the course of natural or human events. Hazony finds that view unsupported, and through this argument, I believe he hopes to attract new or lapsed readers to once again understand the relevance of Hebrew scripture in our distracted modern era. The book certainly had that effect on me. It will change your thinking not only about the situation of Jews in the diaspora or Israel, but about politics and morality in general, whatever your faith. Highly recommended.
