Mr. Hyrum shares the essential keys to a more fulfilling life.

I am one who needs to and has been trying to put some organization and structure in my life. There are also so many other things I would love to do but I don't know where to begin and how to fit it all in my bucket list. Including in this list of need to and wants to is serving others better and in the best way for each person (s). Another is to be a better person for my family and take care of our home in a less stressful way. The "Beliefs Gap" pinpoints exactly how our thoughts on how we see ourselves, people, and life in general is something I had tangled with but could never get myself to "belief" because couldn't put it into perspective. Mr. Smith has laid out the steps in a simple, clear and understandable guide without complicating fancy gibberish. Each of the sections has "baby steps" which makes it less overwhelming. I am no dummy but I like self-help books to simply say what they mean without taking the round-about intersections when a clear straight forward direction is better. And easier to remember. The examples shared at the end of each section further aid in understanding how they helped each person using these methods. For example, the gentleman who saw feared if one doberman pincher was life-threatening then all doberman pinches were. His belief had become foggy. And yet the lady in the example saw them as sweet and reached to pet it. Every apple is not bad just because one is. Mr. Hyrum helps you see through it. It's kind of like an all-or-nothing cognitive thinking but it is hard to see that unless we make ourselves aware of it. I would have enjoyed more examples because I enjoy reading and they further explain clearly how each step can be applied, but I liked the ones included.
I would definitely recommend Mr. Hyrum's if you want and need a better way to improve your life and and achieve the goals you have been trying to accomplish and how you see yourself and the world around you. I am definitely working on applying these steps to get my life on a straightforward path and peace of mind.

Close your gaps!

Don't be fooled by the relative brevity of this book or the apparent simplicity of its message--the principles Hyrum Smith presents here are both profound and powerful. Those who are familiar with Hyrum's presentations over the past several decades will likely recognize some of this material, but it's just as valuable today as ever. The great thing about The 3 Gaps is that Hyrum has boiled down those great ideas into a very memorable pattern that can be readily applied by people and organizations on a daily basis. Recognizing and then systematically closing beliefs gaps, values gaps, and time gaps are sure to make anyone more effective. I can already see some important areas where I'm falling short and can readily see how closing my own gaps will make a huge difference in my personal and team effectiveness.

Unsurprisingly, the book is divided into three sections each focused on one of these gaps. Hyrum explains each gap and then gives practical suggestions for effectively recognizing and closing the gap. His inclusion of material from the personal lives of three guest contributors reinforces his points and also provides very helpful insights into putting his ideas into practice. Although the concepts presented in The 3 Gaps are very simple, I plan to periodically come back to the book and review the material looking for additional nuance and nuggets of insight that I may have missed in prior readings. I'm sure I'll find them.

This is one of the most personally useful book I have ever read ….

The 3 Gaps includes three main sections none of which will be new to you: Beliefs, Values, and Time. What is different is how Smith addresses the relationships between each and the clear way in which he helps us understand what we need to do to close our gaps.

Each section presents in a similar direct way and in some depth. With a little work, each of these three main sections could be a small book in itself. Each section also includes a practical list of actions to bring our beliefs, values, or time choices into alignment. Each list is clear, powerful, and useful.

After clarifying our gaps in the three key areas, Smith asks us this telling question: “What would I cross the I-beam for?” You need to read the whole description of the “I-Beam Exercise” to get the full impact.. Your response to the exercise begins the process of determining your Governing Values – those core things in your life that matter above all else, even your own life.

Once identified, we describe and clarify those Governing Values and then make some hard choices about which values are more important. In my experience, this is the hardest step for most, because every decision to elevate a value means another value moves lower on the list.

Smith writes clearly and simply. Warning: The book starts with a heartbreaking story of personal loss that is hard to read or imagine living through. Throughout this book, you will find a higher percentage than usual of personal and gripping accounts from the author and others who have faced horrific challenges to their bodies and spirits. The stories are often challenging, but give us clear illustrations of what is possible for the human spirit.

The Key Idea: Your choices about your Beliefs, Values, and Time, when aligned individually and with each other, will result in more positive and more effective living.

While many of the actions and recommendations are not unique or new, Smith has collected a powerful set of messages in one concise book. The brevity makes this an easy read, while the content makes it a powerful read.
