Great for Stress Eaters, but so much more!!!
By Sally the Great
Susan Albers' book is for anyone is in the middle of a stressful situation. This book is about so much more than just finding ways to soothe yourself without food. The problem with stress is that it is like falling down a well. Sometimes, we can climb out by ourselves. Sometimes, we need a ladder. The more stressed out or prolonged the stress becomes, the harder it is to find the ladder. This book is a flashlight to help one find the ladder out of stress. It provides a list of tools with explanations that are easy to understand and are truly helpful. In general, it is a book that can help people to find a better balance in life. The 5-5-5-5-5 exercise is brilliant not only for people who are about to indulge in stress eating, but also for people who feel paralyzed by the stress in their life. Pages 44-92 - The Practices should be required reading for every entering college freshman. Susan Albers should speak at colleges during Freshman week on the subject of this chapter. The Practices is a guide to how to not let life get you down.

GET OFF THE "COMFORT-EATING CAROUSEL"
By Barbara
This book is brilliant! It is a sequel to the author's 2009 bestseller, "50 Ways to Soothe Yourself Without Food." This new volume is a treatise of even more techniques, rituals and prompts to help you lighten up with and around your food choices. It also offers references to professional journals and studies that solidify the knowledge backing what Dr. Albers has to share.
This is a comfort read for sure, but it is not simply a "how-to" that you read through from cover-to-cover. This is a book for experimentation and for doing. As I flipped through the pages, I was able to engage in some of the practices right away. Other skills were marked for later use.
I ended up with a book full of yellow highlights and yellow stickies, along with many dog-eared pages. This is a book to return to again and again. It will not only help readers "prepare" for when food cravings strike, it also offers up a varied menu of thoughtful activities to do "in the moment" to help mute those very same cravings.
Applause, applause for Dr. Albers' new and delicious buffet of self-soothing strategies!

Being mindful
By Weston1215
I could not wait to read this book and it did not disappoint. In contrast to typical diet books, this book asks you to be 'mindful', which had been a foreign concept to me. The goal is to make you stop and consider why you want to eat. If you don't really need to eat, then it gives you 50 suggestions of ways to occupy your mind and/or body. Not all of the suggestions suit me, but there were plenty to use and make my own personal list just for me. I now feel more empowered and more aware. Can't wait to try it out!
